A weekend of fun, fans and fantasy

20 May 2019

Since 2002, MCM London Comic Con has become one of the most exciting weekends in the ExCeL calendar.  It’s a fan festival where people dress up as their favourite characters from video games and comic books, celebrating everything from the stories, to the props and actors playing the roles.  During the three days thousands people visit the campus filling it with colour, vibrancy and costumes that defy the imagination.

Keeping people safe

This year more people flocked to the event than ever before.  The stellar Hollywood line-up was a real draw and included Sebastian Stan (Captain America: Winter Soldier), David Harbour (Stranger Things and Hellboy), Misha Collins, (Supernatural), Stephen Amell (Arrow), and the cast of Clerks.

Security, and crowd management are critical to the event.  Using extra hall space to marshal the throngs of fans through security arches and ensuring dangerous weapons are confiscated are key aspects of the planning process for a successful and safe event.

Maximising the space

Not only are empty halls used for queuing, but others accommodate the cloakroom and additional catering, whilst Royal Victoria Square is repurposed as part of an outdoor cinema.  The main event halls are used for an exhibition featuring a range of stands from over 400 table-top exhibitors to bespoke structures for high profile brands such as Sony Playstation and Nintendo, and theatre style presentation areas.
