Community Food Enterprise Limited (CFE) is an award winning social enterprise food business which is rooted in East London and was founded in 2002 by members of the community.
Our aim is to develop a viable and sustainable food business that will provide training, capacity building and employment opportunities for members of the community.
Our mission is to work in partnership with the diverse communities of London, and nationally with those of similar needs, to safeguard and sustain the right of our community in all its diversity to access the right food at an affordable price as a fundamental condition for individual and community health and well-being.
Since January this year, we've had two gleans (gleaning is the process of salvaging fresh fruits and vegetables from farms that are often wasted) in Kent with Feedback Global UK Ltd; we brought back 2.7 tonnes of surplus cauliflowers from a farm in Kent.
As a result of this activity, we were able to hold three cauliflower give-away days in three locations (Gascoigne Primary school in the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham; Gallions Primary School in Beckton, Newham; and Stepney City farm in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets), pictured below. This helped people on low income access nutritious vegetable at no cost to them.
In Newham and East London, we continue to support food banks, soup kitchens, refugee projects and community projects. We are currently working on a mapping to ensure every has access to good, nutritious food.
In other news, we have also grateful to have received a grant from the Evening Standard Dispossessed Fund to expand our work on our social side. We are actively recruiting for a volunteer co-ordinator to manage the projects.
As part of ExCeL London's healthy employee scheme, we have begun providing fruit for their offices on a weekly basis, providing a selection of fresh fruit, from apples to plums!
