ExCeL announces the winner of its no plastic competition

We are delighted to announce the winner of our single-use plastic competition.

Michael Leake, founder and director of Media Steps – a specialist recruitment partner offering solutions to event and media sales related businesses – was the closest with his guess for the number of bottles that ExCeL’s water fountains filled throughout 2019.

The fountains filled the equivalent of 202,764 bottles. In August, Michael was just 13 out, as he guessed that we would have filled 202,777 by the end of the year.

Michael, who lives in Billericay, Essex, will be using the prize of a trip for two and £1,000 spending money to help him celebrate his 20th wedding anniversary in April this year.

The competition was launched last August in a bid to raise awareness of our 2019 “No Plastic Campaign” . This saw all plastic straws removed from the central boulevard and many of our retail partners begin to offer discounts for customers with a reusable cup. To reduce the disposal of hundreds of thousands of plastic bottles, two permanent water fountains were installed earlier in the year to provide free chilled water.

In response to demand for the fountains, two more were added at the other end of the ExCeL boulevard in December.

Jeremy Rees, CEO, ExCeL London, said: “Thank you to everyone who entered this competition in support of our campaign. This means that far fewer plastic bottles have been used in ExCeL this year – around 200,000 fewer – while plastic straws have been removed from use within the venue entirely. 

“This is just one initiative out of many that we have introduced to reduce the venue’s environmental impact and we won’t stop here in our bid to eliminate single-use plastic, wherever possible, from ExCeL.
