Gearing up for Formula E

20 September 2019

Exciting things are happening at ExCeL, with Formula E set to bring electric racing back to the capital in July 2020.

ExCeL is to be the new home of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship in the UK as part of a multi-year agreement, and the 25th July marked the one-year countdown. It will the world’s first ever indoor/outdoor track, with the starting point here at our venue.

We have been working hard to ensure we are ready for this iconic event. Changes to the venue have included 14,000sqm of floor surface treatment to the South Halls, adding 800 replacement bespoke duct plates, widening our lorry shutters and resurfacing of our external campus.

This event is also a significant landmark in London history. Formula E serves as a competitive platform for global car manufacturers and mobility providers to test and develop road-relevant technologies, a market at the forefront of electric vehicle technology and the adoption of clean mobility solutions. Formula E has proved to be increasingly popular with manufacturers in recent years due to advancements in electric and battery technology being used in the cars.

We are proud to be hosting Formula E, and to showcase the versatility of our venue. To mark this inaugural event, we have installed a special year-long activation installation in our west entrance.  There will be a countdown clock and a unique livery on the Gen2 car. Visitors will also be able to view footage of previous races and find out more about the series.
