Newham School Choir & Richard House Children's Hospice shine at ExCeL London Christmas lights switch on

09 December 2021

Christmas came early for children from Calverton Primary School Choir as they joined Richard House Children’s Hospice in officially switching on the Christmas tree lights at ExCeL London.

Before the big switch on, guests – including local dignitaries – were treated to festive fayre and carols from the nearby school, who even performed a song written especially for Richard House.

Founded in 2000, Richard House was the first children’s hospice in London and provides care to children and their families with life-limiting illnesses. It is one of five long-standing Newham based charities ExCeL supports as part of its commitment to give back to the local community.

It was then time for a visit from ‘ExCeL-Claus’ before lighting up the venue’s 26ft tall Christmas tree, weighing almost half a tonne and taking nine people and a crane to install.

Chris Baker, Chief Executive of Richard House Children’s Hospice, said: “We are delighted to be one of ExCel London’s long-standing partners, their support at Christmas and all year round means so much to us, particularly in these challenging times. It was great to come together with members of our community and celebrate Richard House and the partnership in such a festive setting. Thank you ExCel!”

ExCeL CEO Jeremy Rees added: “Supporting our local community has always been something we’re immensely proud of and the work of Richard House is integral to that. Putting on a fun, safe event like this is extremely important to us and we’re glad we were able to create this special moment."

He added: “I am delighted that as well as this event, our team helped Richard House become the official charity partner for the forthcoming London International Horse Show at ExCeL, further aiding their funding efforts.”

Richard House is facing a £500,000 shortfall due to covid-19, to support their Urgent Winter Appeal visit www.richardhouse.org.uk/Appeal/urgent-winter-appeal
