Enactus, an international non-profit organisation, is dedicated to inspiring students to improve the world through entrepreneurial action. They provide a platform for university students to develop community projects, culminating in a series of regional and national competitions.
The UK National Expo brought together 750 university students, 60 academics, and over 350 senior UK business leaders to celebrate Youth Social Action and Social Enterprise.
Enactus Southampton won the competition after showcasing two inspirational social enterprises. The first, Sole Support, trains vulnerable individuals within Kenyan communities to create shoes out of waste tyres. The second, Juamaji, uses heat from the sun to purify dirty water whilst sustainably farming tilapia fish, providing both cleaner water and a staple food source.
Enactus Southampton will now go on to represent Enactus UK in the Enactus World Cup 2017, which will be held at ExCeL London from the 26th to 28th September 2017.
Commenting on the National Expo, Hollie Stanton, Events Manager, Enactus UK, said: “We are delighted to have hosted the 2017 Enactus UK National Expo at ExCeL London and feel that it is just the beginning of much larger things to come, as our event continues to grow. The ICC at ExCeL provides a fantastic venue, allowing us to deliver a valuable experience to all of our attendees."
Andrew Swanston, Head of Sales, ExCeL London, added: “It was a pleasure to welcome Enactus earlier this month and we are delighted that they chose to host their event with us. The event brought with it an enthusiastic, vibrant atmosphere. Our modern, open-plan environment provided the perfect platform for the students to come, get creative, express their ideas and inspire. We look forward to welcoming the Southampton team back to ExCeL for the Enactus World Cup later this year and wish them the very best of luck!"
